What is the NMASS People First Campaign?

The People First Campaign is uniting community members, workers and community groups across the Lower East Side, Chinatown and around the city to stop the displacement of our low-income community of color.

Displacement in NYC is Skyrocketing.

Luxury high rises are going up all around us. Rents and property taxes are skyrocketing. Families and small businesses are being forced out. Services we depend upon are being drained of funding.

In 2008, New York City rezoned the wealthier and predominantly white East Village and intentionally excluded the immigrant communities of color—Chinatown and the Lower East Side. The East Village got height restrictions and zoning protections for their neighborhood, while high-rise, luxury development was pushed into the Lower East Side and Chinatown.

Chinatown and the LES Fight Back

The people of Chinatown and the Lower East Side have united to fight for a rezoning plan that will protect our low-income community of color from displacement. The Chinatown Working Group Rezoning Plan will limit the height and size of buildings, require low-income housing in every new development, and block the sale of public housing and land to developers.

But the city refuses to pass our plan, saying it is too “far-fetched”. The same protections weren’t too “far-fetched” for the East Village. Mayor de Blasio’s refusal is discrimination. It is racist.

We’re uniting thousands of people from our community and across the city to demand, with one voice, that Mayor de Blasio protect our community from displacement by passing the CWG rezoning plan! Mothers and grandmothers, workers, students, business owners, and church groups have all come together. Hundreds marched on City Hall twice this fall. On December 5th, 700 community members joined a town hall meeting to call on de Blasio to pass our rezoning plan and protect our community. Now, we're working together as a part of the Coalition to Protect Chinatown and the Lower East Side to call on people and groups around the city to join the fight to save out city. But we need your help to win.
